📊 Taxation

Colombia applies territorial taxation: only Colombian-source income is taxed for non-residents. A digital nomad's or retiree's foreign income remains outside the Colombian tax scope during the first years.

Territorial taxation for non-residents
During the first 5 years of stay, foreigners are considered tax non-residents and are only taxed on their Colombian-source income. A nomad earning foreign income pays 0% tax in Colombia on that income.
Resident income tax: 0 to 39%
After 5 years, tax residency status applies with a progressive scale from 0 to 39% on all worldwide income. Tax is calculated in UVT (Unidad de Valor Tributario), a unit indexed to inflation.
France-Colombia tax treaty
France and Colombia signed a double taxation treaty (CDI) that has been in force since 2022. It protects French expats against double taxation on the same income.
RUT and filing obligations
Any foreigner earning income in Colombia or creating a business must register for a RUT (Registro Unico Tributario) with the DIAN (Colombian tax administration). Required for opening a business bank account.

🚀 For entrepreneurs

Colombia has significantly simplified business creation and developed attractive innovation zones for startups and foreign entrepreneurs.

Colombian SAS: creation in 24 hours
The Sociedad por Acciones Simplificada (SAS) is the most commonly used legal form. Online creation in 24-48 hours via the Camara de Comercio. No minimum capital, limited liability, single shareholder possible. Incorporation costs: 200-500 USD.
Free zones and tax benefits
Colombian free zones offer a reduced corporate tax of 20% (vs 35% standard) and VAT and customs duty exemptions. Available for exporting companies or those in strategic sectors (tech, logistics, agribusiness).
Ruta N and Medellin innovation ecosystem
Ruta N is Medellin's official innovation center, supported by EPM and the city government. It offers coworking spaces, incubator access, connections with local companies and acceleration programs for foreign startups.
Special regimes for the tech sector
Colombia offers specific tax advantages for tech companies and exported software: corporate tax exemption for 5 years for new technology companies, reductions for digital service exports.

❤️ Healthcare

Colombia has a healthcare system recognized as one of the best in Latin America, with international-level private clinics at very competitive prices.

International-level private clinics
Private clinics in Medellin (Clinica Las Americas, Clinica El Rosario) and Bogota (Clinica de Marly, Fundacion Santa Fe) offer care quality comparable to European standards. Colombia is a major medical tourism destination (surgery, dental, ophthalmology).
Affordable private health insurance
Comprehensive private health insurance costs between 60 and 150 EUR per month for an expat, covering consultations, hospitalization and medications at the best clinics. Several international insurers (Cigna, Allianz, Bupa) offer Colombia-specific coverage.
Access to the EPS system for residents
Foreigners with legal status can contribute to the Colombian healthcare system (EPS - Entidad Promotora de Salud) for about 12% of their declared income, granting access to care for the whole family. An interesting option for long-term residents.

Drawbacks to know

⚠️
Variable security depending on areas
Despite enormous progress in recent years, security remains uneven in Colombia. Some neighborhoods and regions should be avoided. It is important to stay informed, adopt local precautions and avoid ostentatious behavior.
📋
Complex bureaucracy
Colombian administrative procedures can be complex and time-consuming: opening a bank account, registering with the Camara de Comercio, RUT, Cedula de Extranjeria. Plan for help from a local lawyer or gestor.
🌐
Language barrier
Spanish is essential for truly integrating in Colombia. Unlike some anglophone expat destinations, English remains uncommon outside tourist communities and major hotels. A skill worth acquiring before you go.
🌡️
Altitude and adjustment (Bogota)
Bogota sits at 2,600 m altitude. Adjustment can take several weeks: shortness of breath, fatigue, headaches. People with cardiac or respiratory conditions should consult a doctor before settling there.
💸
Currency instability
The Colombian peso (COP) can experience significant fluctuations against the euro and dollar. Expats earning in foreign currencies benefit from this, but those with fixed local expenses may see their purchasing power vary.

Frequently asked questions

Do you need to speak Spanish to settle in Colombia? +
Spanish is strongly recommended for all administrative procedures, daily life and social integration. El Poblado in Medellin and certain neighborhoods of Bogota have a significant English-speaking community, but outside these zones, English is rare. An intermediate level of Spanish will suffice for the first months.
Is the Colombian nomad visa really accessible? +
Yes, it is one of the simplest in Latin America. The procedure is 100% online, processing time is 15 to 30 days, and the minimum income of 3,000 USD/month is verifiable via bank statements or employment contracts. It is valid for 2 years and allows you to include your family.
What is the best city to settle in Colombia? +
Medellin is the number 1 choice for digital nomads and entrepreneurs thanks to its climate, infrastructure and startup ecosystem. Bogota is better suited for executives and families with children. Cali is ideal for tighter budgets and lovers of authentic Colombian culture.
Do I have to pay taxes in France if I settle in Colombia? +
If you break your French tax residency (by leaving France for more than 183 days per year and establishing your life in Colombia), you will no longer be taxed in France on your future income. The France-Colombia tax treaty of 2022 protects against double taxation. A consultation with a tax expert is recommended for your specific situation.
Is Colombia safe for expats? +
The security situation has improved considerably since the 2000s. Medellin and Bogota are now generally safe cities for expats who adopt local precautions. El Poblado, Laureles and expat neighborhoods are very secure. As in any large city, vigilance and common sense remain essential.
